WHEREAS, Mississippi manufacturers produce many world class products and use distinctive production processes to serve markets in the state of Mississippi, the United States and around the globe; and
WHEREAS, Manufacturing directly provides employment to more than 143,000 individuals or 12.5 percent of Mississippi’s total jobs in all 82 counties and helps to support more than 285,000 additional jobs in our local communities; and
WHEREAS, Mississippi ranks 9th in the nation in manufacturing employment; and
WHEREAS, Mississippi manufacturers pay more than $6.5 billion in wages and salaries annually; and
WHEREAS, Manufacturing constitutes 14.4 percent of the gross state product of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Mississippi manufacturers exported over $10 billion worth of manufactured products to the world in 2016, including the state’s top export markets of Canada, Mexico, Panama, China, and Guatemala; and
WHEREAS, 56 Fortune 500 companies have 117 manufacturing plants in Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, 113 international companies from 24 nations are engaged in manufacturing at 142 Mississippi plants; and
WHEREAS, Manufacturing is the engine that powers Mississippi’s economy:
NOW, THEREFORE, I Phil Bryant, Governor of the State of Mississippi, hereby proclaim
October 2-6, 2017, as
MANUFACTURING WEEK IN MISSISSIPPI
and acknowledge the positive impact the manufacturing industry has on our economy and our citizens, and that our economy will continue to grow through the maintenance of a strong manufacturing base in the state.
