WHEREAS, science, technology, and problem-solving are fun and rewarding for children, and the fields are proven paths to successful careers; and

WHEREAS, students who engage in science, technology, engineering,arts and math are more likely to attend college; and

WHEREAS, robotics competitions spark young imaginations, intellect, and creativity, while teaching valuable skills that are useful throughout life; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1989 by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, also known as FIRST, is a program that aims to engage young people in exciting, mentor-based science and technology programs; and

WHEREAS, alumni of this program show dramatic improvement in time-management and problem-solving skills, and are more likely to pursue careers in engineering and volunteer in their communities; and

WHEREAS, FIRST in Florida and Eureka! Factory, which specializes in educational and creative program development, partner together again, along with The Foundation for Community Driven Innovation, University of South Florida, and other organizations and businesses, to host ROBOTICON Tampa Bay 2017; and

WHEREAS, robotics teams from around Tampa Bay and Florida have come to participate in the event, featuring FIRST competitions, workshops, an Innovation Fair, and many more valuable experiences for young people,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of County Commissioners of Hillsborough County, Florida does hereby declare October 2017 as
ROBOTICON Month
in Hillsborough County, and urges residents to support FIRST and other project based youth STEAM education initiatives in its mission to engage young people in the exciting fields of science, technology, engineering, arts and math, while teaching them valuable skills.
