Detroit Manufacturing Systems welcomed almost 250 middle and high school students, educators and parents on Manufacturing Day 2016 to its campus on Detroit's west side, where more than 1 million vehicle instrument panels were produced last year.
Visiting youngsters, who hailed from Academy of the Americas, Breithaupt, Cody, Hamtramck and Western International high schools, along with Gompers Middle School, were treated to facility tours, career talks, production simulations and equipment demonstrations, along with a full lunch and random drawings for $25 gift cards.
New this year, DMS unveiled its Mfg Day Quiz Show to engage students in a fun game that also showcased manufacturing as a pillar of our economy, job creator and possibly the perfect fit for people who are curious about the way things work. Quiz Show contestants won prizes such as Smart TVs, drones and build-your-own-robot kits.
Hip-Hop DJ Dr. Darrius and DMS team members hosted a brief program at the start of the day to encourage young guests to consider a rewarding and good-paying career in modern manufacturing.
The movement for manufacturing is gaining momentum in Detroit!
