To celebrate National Manufacturing Day, the Northwest Georgia College & Career Academy hosted a breakfast and panel discussion on October 6, 2017 for over 80 school counselors, principals, and superintendents from all over northwest Georgia. Rob Bradham, President of the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce (at podium) moderated the discussion about manufacturing with local industry leaders including, from left, Tom Lape, President of Mohawk Residential; David Morgan, Vice President of Manufacturing at Shaw Industries; Joe Yarbrough, President of the Carpet and Rug Institute; and Tim Eickman, North America Operations Manager for Cargill. Students from the Career Academy's Culinary Arts program prepared and served the breakfast for the event. Following the panel, the education leaders toured area manufacturing facilities.
In northwest Georgia, over 69,000 people are employed in over 1100 manufacturing operations. The panel discussion focused on the talent needs of area manufacturers, how education and industry can partner together, and discussions on ways to engage students and parents to help them understand the opportunities that manufacturing can provide.
