About General Motors Warren Transmission Operations

The plant was designed by Albert Kahn and was built in 1941 as a Naval Ordinance facility under the management of Hudson Motor Company and Westinghouse Corporation. In 1960 GM purchased the plant and began producing steel wheels, control arms, axles, and misc stampings. During the 1960’s-70’s, 11 of the original 16 buildings were connected and put under one roof to expand floor space to 2.1 million square feet. In 1981, the plant was transferred to the Hydra-matic Division of GM and 4- speed FWD transmission production began in 1983. 4T65 Transmissions were produced until December 2010. Production of 6T70 Transmissions began in 2006, and they are still produced today. And in 2015 the plant launched production of the drive unit for the next generation Chevy Volt.
